Solid Blu Ray Reader September 9, 2010 Andrew J Heritage This is a great drive. I was a little hesitant to buy this drive at first due to the reviews about software issues. However, after updating with PowerDVD 8's software (included with the drive), it plays Blu Ray discs. You don't need to buy additional software or codecs - just update the software that comes with it. It may not play recently released discs (as some have mentioned Avatar did not work), but I have not run into any problems yet. Upconverting on standard DVDs also looks amazing. I'm not sure I could ever watch a DVD in standard definition ever again. Also, note that they SATA cables needed to plug the drive into your motherboard are not included. So, make sure you have an extra cable around. Another solid Samsung product. I recommend this drive to anyone looking for a Blu Ray drive for under $100.
Good Barebones Drive August 30, 2010 Steven Philips (San Jose, CA United States) I have always liked Samsung products. This looked like a great option to get a combo Blu-ray player with DVD/CD burner. If you don't need a blu-ray burner why pay the extra $$ ;-) The drive itself is fast on the sata. Probably the fastest install of windows 7 64 that I ever had from a drive like this. The OEM blu-ray playing softwar included was not the best to begin with. It did not play without first going through various and long upgrades. Once installed the software would occasionally hang the OS and force a hard reboot.
Great! August 30, 2010 JonBenz So Far So Good. Easy install and setup, very fast CD-AUDIO EXTRACTING. The only thing is i don't know how to activate the UP-SCALING feature.

This is my first Samsung drive, I usually only buy Pioneer drives so I was somewhat skeptical about the quality/ performance. That being said, I'm very satisfied with this drive. My MacBook Pro running Roxio Toast Titanium on Mac OS 10.6.4 recognizes the drive immediately and it simply handles anything I throw at it. Rips DVDs and Blu-Rays very fast. I'm running it as an external by just a SATA to USB 2.0 cable - I wanted to save space on my desk and not put it in an enclosure. Front faceplate is attractive with a black, glossy border with a mirrored finish drive-tray cover. The eject button on the front seems a bit too long but I love that the color it flashes is "Blu" :).
It rips BDs August 25, 2010 Andrew Gallatin (RTP, North Carolina) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought the drive to use on my linux media server. I rip BlueRay movies I own using makemkv for playback on existing SageTV media extenders (rips also play on Boxee, XBMC, etc). This is a much cheaper / easier way to get BluRay playback to all my TVs without having to buy multiple expensive, flaky, BluRay players. It has ripped every BD I've thrown at it (just 7 discs so far). The one issue I've been having is that it will sometimes fail to open the tray if there is no disc in the drive. I'm not sure if this is a linux software issue, or if something about the ejection mechanism is defective. It is easy enough to keep a disc in the drive, so it doesn't really bother me.
