If there's been a zombie apocalypse and you're road-tripping alone though the wasteland, you could do worse than run into Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), a bourbon-swilling bad-boy butt-kicker with a really cool car. This is where the careful hero of Zombieland, a kid nicknamed Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), finds himself early in the film, and you can hardly blame him for hitching a ride with this swaggering Alpha Male. Still, they have their hands full not only with gibbering zombies but also with two sisters (Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin) who will stop at nothing to reach a Disneyland-like amusement park in L.A. Although Zombieland gets off to a rocky start with Columbus's overly-cute narration (he's got a list of rules for surviving in the zombie world), it settles into an amusing comedy, regularly interrupted by bouts of blood-letting. The road-trip stuff is enough fun that when the movie does arrive at its version of Disneyland, the air goes out of it a little; sure, there's a giant zombie blowout, with entrails flying, but it's not quite the same. Director Ruben Fleischer keeps the gags coming, although the movie is often funnier in its odd little asides (both Eisenberg and Harrelson are expert at this) than in its official jokes. Comic high point: an interlude at the home of a very famous movie star, who plays himself--and we'll leave the spoiler unspoiled, in case anybody hasn't heard about this funny extended cameo. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars Zombie Comedy   July 29, 2010
Ian Holdsworth (Melbourne, Australia)
This is a funny movie based on what could be a very serious subject. The props and acting are great and I thought Woody Harrelson was excellent. Watch this movie, but don't take it too seriously!! I understand a sequel is coming out in 2011, which I am looking forward to.

5 out of 5 stars (4.5 STARS) Fun Ride in Zombieland   July 28, 2010
Tsuyoshi (Kyoto, Japan)
Some reviewers have referred to "Zombieland" as America's answer to the 2004 "Shaun of the Dead," a brilliant UK horror comedy set in the post-apocalyptic world. Certainly these two films parody the same genre and it is not surprising that both share some similarities including a simple story about a group of characters desperate to survive, and outrageous (often violent) jokes with lots of gores. But one unique thing about "Zombieland" is, while it definitely belongs to the ever-growing genre of zombie movies, the film works as a road movie and even a romance too, thank to the well-written main characters.

The story follows the four characters travelling in the zombie-infested USA: "Columbus" (Jesse Eisenberg), "Tallahassee" (Woody Harrelson), "Wichita" (Emma Stone), and her sister "Little Rock" (Abigail Breslin). A shy college student "Columbus" is on his way to go back to his home in Columbus, Ohio, when he meets a zombie-hunter "Tallahassee" going on a quest for Twinkies. They and the con-sisters "Wichita" and "Little Rock" team up and travel to a LA amusement park "Pacific Playland" because, as in some other zombie movies, rumor has it that there are no zombies there.

One of the greatest assets of "Zombieland" is the four central characters portrayed by the talented players. First-time director Ruben Fleischer with writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick has successfully created interesting and likable characters you relate to. They are not just stock types waiting to be eaten, all bolstered by unanimously good acting from the cast. The filmmakers strike just the right balance between tension and humor, and believe me or not, things sometimes look very sweet even in the land of flesh-eating undeads, thanks to the two females.

As a comedy, the best bit comes in the hilarious Beverly Hills mansion sequence, where a star appears as a cameo, playing himself to tell us what he regrets most in his career. He appears briefly after the end credits, so please don't miss that part.

"Zombieland" is a fun roller coaster ride with thrills and laughs. It also comes with a nice camerawork (see the stylish slow motion images in the opening, for example). Enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Good quality, good movie   July 26, 2010
Emily Lynne
I have watched this movie that I have received from amazon. Zombieland is a good movie by itself, as I have watched it before. But the quality of the dvd I have recieved is even better than the first time I watched it. The image was crisp, clear, and almost real to me, and it isn't even blue ray. The movie itself, a zombie movie, consists of good humor and good gore. (spoiler) I didn't even get sick as the clown zombie's head was smashed in. (end spoiler) Most of the zombie movies I have watched were more serious than funny, and the mood usually got in the way of my enjoyment of the movie. when I watched Sean of the Dead, it was funny, yes, but the humor was unnecessary and almost sickening at some parts. While I do sometimes enjoy British humor, I will never understand it. Zombieland offered a different sort of humor. It was funny, I understood it, and it almost helped with character development. all in all, it was a very good movie. I look forward to when my brother can watch it. He doesn't like zombie movies, but he said this one looked good. And it was.

5 out of 5 stars One long, glorious inside joke for the zombie folk   July 26, 2010

Zombie culture aficionados rejoice! Your movie has arrived.

If you are a reader of zombie books, a lover of zombie movies, a player of zombie video-games (esp. that last one), you are in for a treat. Off the top of your head, how many rules can you think of for interacting with zombies? If you can think of more than 5, "Zombieland" is for you.

Unlike your uninitiated friends, you do not panic when confronted with zombies. You are well aware of their limitations. You understand that the situation calls for a cool assessment of priorities and resources, and suitable action. You've got to unlock a door while being chased by zombies. But they're closing the distance too fast. Do you turn around, scream horribly, and wait to be devoured?

NO! This is not some goofy B-movie!

You take a lap! Zombies are not bright! They don't know to just wait by the door until you come back and then eat you. They will follow you! All you have to do is put some distance between you and them, run back to the door with more time, and calmly let yourself in.

If this all makes sense to you, buy "Zombieland." If you fantasize about finding a massive cache of large caliber weapons and ammunition during a post-apocalyptic scenario, buy "Zombieland." If you plot what you would salvage from grocery stores after a zombie attack, buy "Zombieland." In fact, just buy "Zombieland." You'll thank me for it.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars-Zombie road trip flick   July 26, 2010
B. Martin
It's no Shaun of the Dead, a film that it is clearly influenced by, but the goofy yet engaging Zombieland has a nicely off-kilter sense of humor all its own. This is due in no small part to the comic chemistry generated between the two male leads, Jesse Eisenberg (once again playing his finely honed neurotic character type) and Woody Harrleson. The two star as surviors of a post-apocalyptic landscape populated entirely by flesh craving zombies. Apparetnly it was a strain of mad cow disease that resulted in the infestation.

Eisenberg plays Colombus, the narrator of the film who also has a lenghty list of rules about how to survive amongst the undead; rule number one is cardio. One needs to be fit in order to outrun the zombies, you see. The plot kicks into gear when Colombus meets up with Tallahassee (Harrelson), a booze drinking, zombie killing machine with a major Twinkie craving. The two form an uneasy bond that gives off a nice comic glow and really puts the movie into gear. Eventually they meet up with two sisters (Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin) who con them out of their vehicle and weapons. It's not too difficult to predict that these four end up forming a family-like unit as they head to an amusement park in California, or that Colombus falls for the older sister. What is surprising about this development is how genuine the affection between the characters feels. They truly become like a family since they have no other human connections in the world. There's an especially tender moment when Tallahassee lets down his guard and reveals the wounded human being behind his cocky swagger.

But hey, let's not get too serious. Zombieland is first and formeost a comedy and it never loses sight of that fact. As a reminder of this, there is a teriffic cameo towards the movie's latter half that serves as the comedic high point of the film and would make Zombieland worth watching on its own. I won't spoil the surprise for anyone who hasn't seen the movie, but it is a true comic treat. So is the rest of the movie. It may not be as laugh out loud funny as Shaun of the Dead, but for those looking for an enjoyable road trip movie that just happens to involve flesh eating zombies, Zombieland delivers the goods.
