Amazon.com essential video Fresh from his huge success with the beloved Kramer vs. Kramer, writer-director Robert Benton chose to make a 180-degree turn with this frosty thriller. Roy Scheider plays a Manhattan psychologist, Sam Rice, who is dragged into a murder investigation when one of his patients is killed. The prime suspect is played by Meryl Streep, then at the height of her stardom (the film was released within a week of Streep's triumphant Sophie's Choice in 1982). Rice understandably lets his basic instincts take over and falls for this brisk, blond mystery woman, though he can't help wondering whether she will kiss him or kill him. The movie may be chilly, but it's well executed, with all-cool style and Hitchcockian angles. Benton gets good work from an expert supporting cast, including Jessica Tandy as Rice's mother, who's also a shrink. --Robert Horton

Elegant Psychological Thriller June 29, 2010 James S. Eisenberg Meryl Streep and Roy Scheider are at the top of their game in this elegant little thriller set in the worlds of high end art auctions and New York psychiatrists offices. Scheider is a shrink who falls for Streep, an art dealer who is a suspect in the murder of one of his clients. As with most New York thrillers, there is a hard boiled police detective who thinks the worst of everybody ! Jessica Tandy is an odd but brilliant choice to play Scheider's mother. Yes there are many cliches of the genre here, and like many thrillers, the ultimate explanation and the climax are a bit of a letdown, but the film manages to be genuinely suspenseful in a quiet and effective way. This one really deserves release on DVD.
not just hitchcock March 7, 2010 Easily Amused (Vermont) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Wife and I saw it on MGM showcase high-def cable channel-- (1) We had no expectations. (2) We enjoyed it. (3) I'm no cineaste, but while it's certainly a Hitchcock homage (Streep had fun being a Hitchcock blonde), there are also clear hat-tips to other psych-out thrillers, notably "Don't Look Now" and "Cat People." (4) Overall, a lesser effort from the director and cast, and as folks say fairly cold, but glimpses of young naked Meryl Streep were hot, the denoument turned out to be a surprise after all, the dream sequence was gripping and creepy, and despite a certain by-the-numbers quality, including a few too many sudden "gotcha!-made-ya-jump!"s, it was genuinely suspenseful, with a couple of unexpected turns. Movies on TV are like diners in a strange town you're passing through: in this one the food was edible-to-tasty, and I was glad I'd stopped. While I wouldn't drive very far out of my way, and I'd probably try something else from the menu, I'd stop at such a diner again.
Still Of The Night September 14, 2009 storytime (USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Excellent film. Seasoned actors. I'd like to get the sheet music for the theme music by John Kander. I don't know if it's titled "Still Of The Night", after the film title. I've searched endlessly. I just loved that music. I'd love to play it on my piano. I saw it on MGM satellite channel from DISH this weekend. Want to see it again and again.
DVD PLEASE!!!!!! July 29, 2009 EAF (Alabama, USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I've seen a lot of movies. This would be a perfect movie to view in letterbox form (would anyone watch Jaws any other way??). The "Hitchcockian" suspense, the fantastic Long Island seaside cottage and the terrific casting provide the viewer with an unforgettable story; one wants to watch it more than once! Whoever owns the rights to this movie, when are they going to come out with the letterbox DVD? Stupid they've waited this long- they would make a fortune.
Very Atmospheric Thriller October 21, 2007 Susan K. Schoonover (Boulder, CO) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a good thriller with lots of creepy touches. Roy Scheider is a recently divorced Manhattan psychiatrist. One of his patients is murdered and both the police and the victim's beautiful girlfriend (Meryl Streep) who seems to be the top suspect contact him. There is an immediate romantic attraction between Scheider and Streep and Scheider attempts to solve the murder using information the deceased man revealed to him during his twice weekly appointments. The most important info is a disturbing dream which is reenacted on screen in a memorable and truly chilling manner. The deceased and Streep's character worked together at "Christen's" auction house specializing in antiquities and much of the film is set in this affluent world of high end art. Manhattan at night is used to good effect throughout the film and a fine soundtrack also enhances the atmosphere. Meryl Streep is especially good and needed to learn no new dialect or alter her own lovely appearance for this part. The ending is more than a little contrived and pretty improbable but the movie is very worth watching for any lovers of Streep or thrillers influenced by Alfred Hitchcock.
