Like The Passion of the Christ, Luther is the story of a spiritual leader, German monk Martin Luther (Joseph Fiennes), in opposition to the religious orthodoxy of the time (in his case, the 1500s). His goal--to bring God to the people and to take money, fear, and shame out of the equation--made him a reformer to some, a heretic to others. Released around the same time as Mel Gibson's blockbuster, it failed to attract the same degree of attention--or controversy. Granted, it's a different film, but not radically so. Directed by Eric Till (Bonhoeffer: Agent of Grace), Luther isn't always easy to follow or as emotionally involving as it could be. That said, it's a fascinating story and Fiennes receives solid support from Alfred Molina (Frida), Bruno Ganz (Wings of Desire), and the late Sir Peter Ustinov (Spartacus), in his final film role, as Frederick the Wise. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

The movie is excellent, especially for those new to Christianity, the truth about Catholic deceit/strong-arming, and the beginning of a Protestant beginning. I would like to see a movie that covers Luther's entire life. Be sure to read about him and reformation and don't take this movie as gospel.

The movie started out slow and was a little hard to follow. As the story progressed I was able to follow the plot and by the time it was over I was spell bound. Martin Luther followed his heart in his search for God and truth. He didn't set out to be a reformer or to start a new church. He had the courage of his convictions and stood up for what he believed was right to the benefit of the christian world. He had a heart for the people and wanted them to be free from bondage through the love and grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. He was blessed to find a wife who was strong and wise and able to be a help meet to him.

Too bad they didn't show his arguments with the devil in which luther and the devil would throw feces at each other. Lutherans must be so proud to have a psychotic nutjob who was completely ignorant of history and Church(the true Church that is)teaching as their founder. No big surprise that their attendance is dwindling to practically nothing.
